The Gushiegu District was carved out of the then Eastern Dagomba district.  It is located in the north-eastern part of the Northern Region. It is the third largest district in the region. Gushiegu, the district capital, is about 105 kilometres north-east of Tamale, the regional capital.

The district shares boundaries with the East and West Mamprusi Districts to the north Yendi District, to the south, Saboba/Chereponi District to the east and Savelugu / Nanton District to the west.

Gushiegu, the district capital, can boast of the largest cattle market in the region. Gushiegu also has one of the largest and busiest agricultural produce markets in the region, which attracts traders from Techiman, Bawku and even the neighbouring Republic of Burkina Faso. ... more »

As a measure to improve upon the quality of education in the Gushegu District and the country as a whole, a total of 23 classroom blocks have been built in various schools in the District to solve the challenge of schools under trees.
