Gushiegu District was carved out of the then Eastern Dagomba district. It among the twenty six (26) districts in the northern region. It is located in the north-eastern part of the Northern Region. The administrative capital of the district is Gushiegu and is about 105 kilometres north-east of Tamale, the regional capital. The district shares boundaries with the East Mamprusi Districts and Bunkpurugu/yunyoo district to the north, Yendi municipal to the south, Saboba and Chereponi Districts respectively to the east and Karaga District to the west.
